VIEW FROM THE STEERING COMMITTEE
View from the Steering Committee
The steering committee met to determine the progress that has been made so far. We were in unanimous agreement that you all have put in tremendous effort on behalf of the City. We are impressed with the time that you have spent reading reports, conducting interviews, making visits to help secure a vision for Prescott. Thanks and keep up the good work.
We listened to you when you said you would like some guidance for the interim report that will be due in late September. You will find a grid attached to this note to serve as a guide. We liked the idea of creating time frames since some recommendations may be accomplishable before 2050. We will leave it to each study group to set up interim times.
We would also like you to create a vision statement much like the one below created by the Development Committee:
Smart Growth is a critically important goal for a viable City of Prescott in 2050 and beyond. Smart Growth is an interrelated set of planning, design, and connectivity principles that focuses on and advocates compact, pedestrian-oriented land use practices, including mixed-use development which ideally supports a range of housing choices, economic and transportation opportunities.
Smart Growth is the best alternative to avoid the blight of urban sprawl. A Smart Growth Community is a place where every citizen can fulfill his or her basic needs within any given neighborhood. These basic needs include food, shelter, employment, entertainment, education, recreation, transportation, and other supporting services.
A Smart Growth Plan supports long-range, regional considerations of genuine sustainability over short-term goals. With a Smart Growth Plan the City of Prescott, deeply rooted in its pioneering and historical past, is a community retaining its unique sense of place, while moving dynamically into the future.
It would help if you could identify those recommendations that might go beyond the Prescott City limits. Clearly, we cannot dictate what other entities in Yavapai County will do, but we recognize that some issues are regional.
If you could also identify those recommendations that might be accomplished by public and/or private partnerships would be useful.
We will hear your progress reports on August 28, 2008, at 6PM in Council Chambers.
The interim report will be due September 25, 2008.
